Coffee with a Googler meets with Fontaine Foxworth to talk about the Places API in Google Maps. Places give locations in the world semantic meaning. Your favorite coffee shop isn’t just an address or a latitude and longitude, it’s a place. With the API, you can locate and get metadata about a place, giving you lots of fun applications you can build!

Places API has so much potential.I still feel like the Foursquare API is easier to use, but I feel like the data over at Google Places is slightly better.

How to get to the opera house? Oh man, people in the cheap seats clap your hands, those looking for the opera house should rattle their jewelry. There is a direct correlation between the rise of the tech in silicon valley, and the increase of homeless families. No skin off your sweet pink assess.

Google is headquarted in an area where kids live in million dollar condos and in tent cities. They think they can solve a problem, but there are homeless kids less than 20 miles from their campus.

The profit model of social apps is technically conspired. Its not a coincidence. Anyway, if you ask why homeless kids in tents don't have jobs, I question your humanity. The industry loves to pretend they are bettering humanity, but while there are kids in tents a few miles away from the investors condos and mc mansions, its deluded arrogance.

John Fabiani, If you do not beleive that something can be given for free, why do you ask for that? Inconsistent. Can I ask, what those (poor) people doing when they are not busy with a job search? do they give all theirs time/services for free to someone else? huh?I am not an advocate of capitalizm. Quite the opposite – I believe Google is like not many peers else helping to transform it to a better economic model. Yes, they do have to delight investors too. But Google cannot dump investor's money on the street, it is not Google's money.… Read more »

Also, nothing is given away for free. Even maps. Remember this: when you are not paying to use a product, YOU ARE the product.

John Fabiani, Homelessness is a problem but you will not be able to solve it by taking out the resources from most capable people who push the things forward. Actually, if you really interested to improve the things quicker in longterm, you may have to do the opposite. Google gave away alot services for free to the world, including worldwide mapping service. This single service alone provided unmeasurable positive net gain – worldwide. We used to have it for free but 20 years earlier giving away such service at no charge would be unthinkable. Even now, none of any other… Read more »

Is there any way to use Places API to suggest two people in one city place to meeting optimal for both of them with approximately the same ride duration from their locations?

I want to know more about place called Antarctica. Why are there no satellite images? Is it because the world is flat and you are hiding this from us?

Satellites tend to be in geostationary orbit above the equator, hence the photos having North/South poles at the edges. Not sure if geopolar satellites give imagery.
