as of the latest version 1.16.1 You can do a git merge in the command and create branch on the status bar now 🙂

I wonder if you may be able to help. My 'git' icon on the VSC control panel shows '99+' and occasionally gives an alert "You have to many staged commits in users/<myname>/.git. When I try to manage these files I get an error that says I already have an index.lock file. When I delete it, another one pops up in its place. I can still code on VSC but I'd like to learn the proper way to manage these files. Any pointers towards this solution would be most appreciated.

It's just another tool to have. You aren't required to commit via an interface and I don't personally. VSCode has a terminal built in for easy access.
