These are two different technologies yes. But the main difference is that whenever you work with solutions running locally on your machine (like VertiPaq) you have limitations regarding the data size you want to analyze (either because of the limitations of the tool or of your machine). Athena does not have such limitations, as the calculation is performed in the cloud and therefore can always access the required machine power to perform the requested tasks.
