The reason why Swift and Kotlin look so similar was given by Martin Odersky in a talk on Scala. There are families of languages, at least the Lisp and ML family. Kotlin looks like Scala (which is over 10 years old by now), and Scala looks like ML. Just look at ML and you'll wonder how modern it looks.
