In this video we will see How to install MongoDB on Mac OS X. MongoDB is one of the most used, open-source document database, and NoSQL database. MongoDB is developed by 10gen.

$ cd ~/Download
$ tar xzf mongodb-osx-x86_64-2.2.3.tgz
$ sudo mv mongodb-osx-x86_64-2.2.3 /usr/local/mongodb

create MongoDB Data directory
$ sudo mkdir -p /data/db
$ whoami
codebind
$ sudo chown codebind /data/db

Set mongodb/bin to $PATH
$ cd
$ pwd
/Users/codebind
$ touch .bash_profile
$ open .bash_profile

export MONGO_PATH=/usr/local/mongodb
export PATH=$PATH:$MONGO_PATH/bin

After following these step, I got these error messages:
$ mongo
dyld: Symbol not found: _fchmodat
Referenced from: /usr/local/mongodb/bin/mongo
Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
in /usr/local/mongodb/bin/mongo
Trace/BPT trap: 5

$ mongod

i don't have the .bash_profile or .bashrc on my mac. does that mean that there something missing in my $path or my mac installation?

I think that means you never used that before. In order to have your mac understand where to look for the mongo, you need to add the path to mongo to it. In your case, you do not have that file, just create one as indicated in the video.
