To all the people arguing against Elon, as crazy as this sounds and as ridiculous as it sounds, I promise you, he is smarter than you and could prove you wrong.

OK. A caveat. We are conscious. Now we don't know how consciousness comes in to being, if in the process of improving our games, we accidently give rise to consciousness, then the argument works. But if the games become realistic, but without creating consciousness, then we know that we're not in any of those games, because the lights are on here.

Doesn't knock out the argument at all, but it's a hurdle it has to jump.

+Ryan Wang I don't see any reason why consciousness can't happen with silicon. But just because you create general intelligence, does not mean you create consciousness.

We already have machines that are better at specific tasks than humans, that doesn't make them conscious, and neither will simply having them become general, unless there is some law that says they will.

Thing is though, there's literally no evidence for such a law. We could make human level intelligence, that while displaying complex behaviours, is totally unconscious.

It is not impossible to "create" consciousness. We don't have to accidentally do it. Currently, our robots have the basics: memory and basic mathematical logic. What we need now is to allow these robots to be able to communicate with each other in a way similar to a language. We also need to start interacting and learning from objects in the world by themselves without giving them instructions. Over time, they will grow by learning how to build their own memory banks, their own body parts, their own communications infrastructures. They will learn to create their own language and art. They… Read more »

I do like to entertain this idea…but where are the glitches? Any simulation that advanced would have SOME anomalies and shortcuts in the programing. Thoughts anyone?

+Patchuchan Well luckily for you it's only half true.

+SilverWaffle SuperSaiyan i have been saying that for years. what if the paranormal things people are seeing are just brief glimpses into other dimensions or universes? i also think that physics will eventually be able to explain most of them as such.

+Topcat6712 all we need to do is get the tech to support sustaining consciousnesses down so that we (me) can live out multiple lives in these machines until we're (I'm) satisfied

+franklin cruz true, he gave 10000 years as an estimate if technology came to a temporary halt (unless the actual worst case scenario comes true, in which case, it's back to survival and hunter gatherers)

So reality may be a virtual reality within a reality that is constantly repeating itself to create the next virtual reality within its own virtual reality.

Or one supreme being that's postponing it's own death.

Then I guess perhaps the "true" reality is no reality at all lol.

Philosophy is so utterly useless.

Philosophy creates insights, like religion is BS.

Not really, it's fun to ponder life's biggest questions, isn't it?

Why would anyone program in the holocaust? Problem of evil vis a vis computer simulation

It's possible the universe was created in a simulation initially but then chance took the wheel. Evolution probably wasn't planned out. The holocaust – I hope – wasn't programmed. I imagine it'd sorta be like Sean Murray's No Man's Sky, not even the creators know what exists in the universe they built.

Why wouldn't they?
